What is Triclabendazole?
Triclabendazole is a narrow-spectrum antiparasitic active ingredient used in veterinary medicine. It is mainly used in livestock against flukes. However, it is not used against agricultural and household pests. It belongs to the chemical class of the benzimidazoles. It is also known as flukicide anthelmintic.
Triclabendazole mode of operation:
The mode of operation of Triclabendazole results from inhibition of microtubule formation. The β-tubulin protein of F. hepatica exhibits species-specific protein changes at position 82 (glutamic acid) and position 91 (threonine), which are unique among nematodes and cestodes.
Synonyms of Triclabendazole:
CGA 89317, CGP 23030 are the synonyms of Triclabendazole.
Triclabendazole and Animal diseases:
It is important to note that Triclabendazole is a narrow-spectrum benzimidazole with highly flukicidal efficacy. It is only used to treat diseases caused by flukes. It is not effective against tapeworms, roundworms, or most of the external parasites. It is mostly used in ruminants mainly as a drench, often mixed with other anthelmintics loke ivermectin, levamisolewith nematicidal efficacy. It is not administered for swine, poultry, horses or pets, simply because flukes are not an issue for these animals.
Triclabendazole benefits/effectiveness/results:
Study reveals that Triclabendazole is the most effective drug for both cattle and buffaloes against flukes with efficacy of 97.92% and 100% and against three sucking lice species of cattle and against gastro-intestinal nematodes in sheep. Triclabendazole (TCBZ) is highly recommended for treating infections of the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica in livestock. It is effective against adult and juvenile flukes.
Triclabendazole is a veterinary anthelmintic flukicide compound belonging to the chemical class of the benzimidazoles. It is used very frequently to treat only on flukes on sheep, goats and cattle, mostly in drenches, seldom in the form of tablets, boluses, etc. It is to be noted that Triclabendazole is not used on pig, poultry, dogs or cats. However, to make it effective against roundworms, it is often used in mixtures, together with a broad-spectrum nematicide e.g. abamectin, albendazole, fenbendazole, ivermectin, levamisole.
